Minecraft Ice Caves Drop: Release Window & New Features

FAQ

When does the Minecraft ice caves drop come out?
Expected December 2026, following Minecraft's quarterly drop cadence. It was announced at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026 without a final name — the community calls it the ice caves drop; it should land as Java 26.4.
What is the Frozen zombie in Minecraft?
A new zombie variant shown at Minecraft Live September 2026 — it stacks freezing on melee hits and throws ice balls. Ice balls can also be brewed into Freezing potions, and regular zombies convert to Frozen in powder snow.
What did the Ice Caves announcement include?
An ice caves biome for the Overworld, ice crystals you can place horizontally or vertically that emit light, icicles that fall when exposed to light, the Frozen zombie, and ice balls usable as Brewing ingredients.

When does the ice caves drop release?

Expected December 2026. Mojang announced it at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026 as the next game drop after Wilderness Bound — no final name yet, and no exact date, but Minecraft’s 2026 cadence (March / June / September drops) points to December. It should ship as Java 26.4 with a matching Bedrock version line.

Everything on this page is announcement-sourced — Mojang has only shown broadcast footage, not a changelog. We’ll update the page as snapshots land.

What’s confirmed in the ice caves drop?

  • Ice caves biome — a new Overworld cave biome built from ice, packed ice, and the new crystal blocks
  • Ice crystals — placeable light-emitting decorations that can be oriented horizontally or vertically
  • Icicles — hang from cave ceilings and fall when exposed to light, a trap mechanic for caves and bases
  • Frozen zombie — a new zombie variant that stacks Freezing on melee hits and throws ice balls at range
  • Ice balls → Freezing potions — ice balls work as a Brewing ingredient, opening a new status-effect potion line
  • Zombie conversion — regular zombies that spend time in powder snow convert into Frozen zombies, which has real farm implications

Why does it matter for farms and combat?

The zombie-to-Frozen conversion via powder snow mirrors the zombie-to-drowned water conversion — meaning Frozen zombie farms become feasible, and ice balls (hence Freezing potions) become renewable. A stacking-freeze melee mob in a cave biome also changes how dangerous early-game caving is in cold regions.

How do version numbers work now?

Since 2026, both editions use year-based numbers: Java steps per drop (26.1 → 26.2 → 26.3 → 26.4) and Bedrock steps its release line by tens (26.10 → 26.30 → 26.50). The editions version independently — a Java 26.3 feature set does not equal a Bedrock 26.3x feature set by name alone.
