How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft: Best Y Level & Mining

FAQ

What is the best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft?
Y=-59 — the deepest deepslate layer where diamond ore peaks (ore data: deepslate diamond is most common at Y=-58/-59). Keep lava pools in mind and carry a water bucket.
Is caving or strip mining better for diamonds?
Branch mining wins since the 1.18 ore rework — diamond blocks have up to a 50-70% chance to skip generating next to air, so open caves hold fewer visible diamonds than the rock itself does. Cave if you enjoy it, mine if you want yield.
Do I need an iron pickaxe for diamonds?
Yes — diamond ore requires an iron pickaxe or better (diamond, netherite). Mining it with wood or stone destroys the ore with no drop.
Can I get diamonds without mining?
Yes — diamonds and diamond gear appear in buried treasure, shipwrecks, bastions, end cities, and village toolsmith chests, and master-level toolsmiths/weaponsmiths sell diamond gear for emeralds.

What is the best Y level for diamonds?

Y=-59 — stand there and mine so your head is around Y=-58. Diamond ore generates from Y=16 all the way down to bedrock in a triangular distribution that gets denser the deeper you go, and the ore data shows deepslate diamond ore is most common at Y=-58 and Y=-59. Below that you’re hitting the bedrock floor itself.

Watch for the lava aquifer around Y=-54 and below — carry a water bucket on the hotbar.

Branch mining or caving — which is better?

Since the 1.18 ore rework, branch mining wins on yield: diamond ore generation runs in four batches per chunk, and three of them give the ore a 50–70% chance to not generate at all if it would be exposed to air. Diamonds hidden in solid rock are guaranteed; diamonds on cave walls are the survivors.

The efficient pattern:

  1. Dig a staircase down to Y=-59.
  2. Main tunnel straight out; side branches every 3 blocks (leaves 2 solid between — no ore can hide in a 2-thick wall you can’t see… widen to 4 if you want every vein).
  3. Branch only in deepslate — it’s slower to mine but that’s where the ore concentrates.

Caving is still more fun and exposes more surface per minute — just know the math is against it since air-exposed veins are thinned by generation.

What pickaxe and enchantments should I use?

  • Iron or better is required — wood/stone destroys the ore with no drop.
  • Fortune III raises the average drop to ~2.2 diamonds per ore — apply it to a dedicated pickaxe.
  • Silk Touch an ore and bring it home to Fortune later — or build an ore museum.
  • Efficiency V + a beacon Haste II makes deepslate branch-mining tolerable.

Where else do diamonds come from?

Mining isn’t the only route:

  • Chests: buried treasure, shipwrecks, desert temples, bastion remnants, end cities — end cities can drop fully enchanted diamond gear.
  • Trading: master-level toolsmiths and weaponsmiths sell diamond tools and weapons for emeralds — trading is the only renewable source of diamond gear. See our villager trades guide.
  • The End: after the Ender Dragon, end city loot is the fastest diamond-gear pipeline in the game.

What’s the upgrade path after diamonds?

Full diamond gear → Netherite upgrade at a smithing table — ancient debris, gold, and a smithing template from a bastion. Diamond is the end of the mining chain, not the end of gearing.
