FAQ

How many biomes are in Minecraft?
Java Edition has 67 biome types: 56 in the Overworld, 5 in the Nether, 5 in the End, and 1 that only appears in a superflat preset. Bedrock Edition lists 89 types, but 27 are legacy entries that no longer generate.
What does a biome actually control?
A biome sets the region's grass, leaf and water colors, its temperature and downfall (rain vs snow vs none), which mobs spawn, which structures can generate, and what the sky and fog look like. Replacing the blocks doesn't change the biome — it's set at world generation.
What is the rarest Minecraft biome?
Mushroom fields, ice spikes, and eroded badlands are generally the rarest surface biomes. Among cave biomes, deep dark is the rarest. See our rare biomes guide for finding each one.

How many biomes are in Minecraft?

Java Edition has 67 biome types: 56 Overworld, 5 Nether, 5 End, and one extra that only appears in a superflat preset. Bedrock Edition lists 89, but 27 of those are legacy entries that no longer generate — the playable set is the same collection as Java’s.

A biome is decided at world generation and is independent of the blocks on the surface — it controls grass and water color, weather type, mob spawns, and which structures are allowed to generate.

What are the Overworld biomes?

The 56 Overworld biomes group into a few families:

The 67th Java biome is the void, used only by a superflat preset.

What are the Nether and End biomes?

Dimension Biomes
Nether (5) nether wastes, crimson forest, warped forest, soul sand valley, basalt deltas
End (5) the end, small end islands, end midlands, end highlands, end barrens

Nether biomes control which mobs spawn — hoglin and piglin density varies per biome. In the End, only the end highlands can grow chorus trees and generate end cities.

How do you find a specific biome fast?

  • /locate biome <name> — returns the nearest coordinates on both editions; pair with the teleport command to jump straight there
  • Chunkbase-style seed maps — enter your seed to preview the biome layout (see our best seeds for strong starting layouts)
  • Climate logic — cold biomes cluster with cold, warm with warm; badlands only appear near deserts and savannas, mushroom fields only as ocean islands

What’s coming next?

An ice caves biome is confirmed for the Ice Caves drop expected December 2026 — it will join the cave-biome family alongside lush caves and dripstone caves once the fourth drop of 2026 ships.
