FAQ

How do I teleport to coordinates in Minecraft?
Type /tp <x> <y> <z> in chat — for example /tp 100 64 -200 teleports you to X100 Y64 Z-200. Add @s or a player name before the coordinates to teleport someone else.
What does ~ mean in the tp command?
~ means 'relative to my current position' — /tp @s ~10 ~ ~ moves you 10 blocks east. ~ followed by nothing means 'this exact coordinate', so /tp @s ~ ~ ~ does nothing but is legal.
How do I teleport to another player?
/tp <yourname-or-selector> <playername> — e.g. /tp @s Alex sends you to Alex, /tp Alex @s brings Alex to you. On Bedrock the destination can also be written as a selector like @a[tag=hub].
Is /teleport the same as /tp?
Yes — /tp is just the alias of /teleport on both editions since Java 1.13. The syntaxes below apply to both spellings.

How do I teleport to coordinates?

The core form — works on both editions:

Command Result
/tp 100 64 -200 Teleports you to X=100, Y=64, Z=-200
/tp @s 100 64 -200 Same, explicit self
/tp Alex 100 64 -200 Teleports Alex instead

On Java the argument order is teleport <targets> <location>; on Bedrock it’s teleport <victim: target> <destination: x y z>. /teleport can send entities into chunks that haven’t been generated yet — the game generates the destination chunk on the way.

What do ~ and ^ mean?

  • ~ = relative coordinate to your current position: /tp @s ~5 ~ ~-5 shifts you 5 east and 5 north. ~ alone means “this coordinate” — /tp @s ~ ~10 ~ would try to put you inside a block at Y10, so always offset it.
  • ^ = facing-relative (caret) coordinate — /tp @s ^ ^ ^10 teleports you 10 blocks forward, in the direction you’re looking. Great for “get me out of this cave” moments.

How do I teleport to a player or entity?

Command Result
/tp @s Alex You go to Alex
/tp Alex @s Alex comes to you
/tp @a @s Every player teleports to you
/tp @e[type=cow] @s Every cow teleports to you (Java)

On Java the destination must resolve to a single entity — use @p not @a as the destination. Bedrock is more permissive and also lets you add facing variants:

Command Result
tp <victim> <destination> facing <x y z> Face a point after landing
tp <victim> <destination> facing <entity> Face an entity

What’s different on Bedrock?

  • Permission level is lower (level 1 vs Java’s level 2), but the command is cheat-gated: enable Cheats in world settings, which disables achievements on that world.
  • Bedrock adds a checkForBlocks boolean — tp @s 100 64 -200 true only teleports if you wouldn’t end up inside a solid block (it still allows flowers and midair).
  • Bedrock uses yRot/xRot arguments for rotation instead of Java’s facing anchor system; Java’s facing variant: tp @s 100 64 -200 facing 200 64 -200.

Useful real-world combos

Command Result
/tp @s ~ 100 ~ Pop straight up to Y=100 (watch the fall)
/tp @p -1500 71 2200 Send the nearest player to your base coords
/kill @e[type=item] Different command — pair with tp for cleanup

For locating targets to teleport to, pair it with /locate — e.g. /locate structure minecraft:stronghold prints clickable coordinates in chat on both editions; click the green coords to autofill a /tp.
