FAQ
How do you make a brewing stand in Minecraft?
Combine 1 blaze rod (top) with 3 cobblestone-tier blocks (bottom row). Blaze rods come from blazes in nether fortresses. You can also find brewing stands in village churches and igloo basements.
What fuels a brewing stand?
Blaze powder — each piece fuels 20 brewing operations, and one operation can process up to 3 bottles simultaneously. A stack of 64 blaze powder brews 1,280 batches.
Why can't I brew a weakness potion?
You can — weakness is the exception: add a fermented spider eye directly to a water bottle, no nether wart or awkward potion required.
How do you start brewing?
You need three things before anything brews:
- Brewing stand — craft with 1 blaze rod + 3 cobblestone, or loot one from a village church / igloo basement
- Blaze powder — fuel; each piece powers 20 brewing operations
- Glass bottles filled with water — right-click any water source
Each brewing operation takes 20 seconds and processes up to 3 bottles at once — always brew in batches of three.
The brewing chain, step by step
- Water bottle + nether wart → Awkward Potion — the base for 18 of 19 potions
- Awkward Potion + effect ingredient → effect potion — e.g., magma cream → Fire Resistance (full table in all potions)
- + redstone dust → extended duration (usually 3:00 → 8:00)
- + glowstone dust → level II (shorter but stronger)
- + gunpowder → splash (throwable)
- + dragon’s breath (on splash) → lingering (leaves a cloud); craft 8 tipped arrows per lingering potion
Redstone and glowstone are mutually exclusive — pick duration or power. The fermented spider eye corrupts a potion instead: swiftness→slowness, healing→harming, night vision→invisibility.
What ingredients go where?
| Slot | Items | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Top | nether wart, effect ingredients, modifiers | Consumed ingredient |
| Left | blaze powder | Fuel (20 batches each) |
| Bottom | 1–3 bottles | Input/output |
Farm nether wart in nether fortresses (stairwells and corridors) and replant it on soul sand. Every serious brewing setup starts with a wart farm — it’s the gating ingredient for nearly every potion.
What are the fastest useful brews?
- Fire Resistance (magma cream, extended) — before every nether trip; pairs with your nether portal prep
- Strength II (blaze powder + glowstone) — for boss fights like the Wither
- Water Breathing + Night Vision — turns ocean monuments from nightmare to loot run
- Weakness + golden apple — the zombie-villager cure that unlocks the best villager trades
- Slow Falling — cheap insurance for the End and elytra practice
