FAQ

How do you craft in Minecraft?
Open your inventory for a 2x2 grid, or place a crafting table for the full 3x3 grid. Arrange ingredients in a pattern to produce the output. The green recipe book auto-fills any recipe you've unlocked.
How do you unlock recipes in Minecraft?
Automatically — the recipe book learns recipes as you pick up relevant materials. Collect iron and iron recipes appear; there's nothing to research manually.
What is a smithing table used for?
Three jobs: upgrading diamond gear to netherite (with a Netherite Upgrade template + netherite ingot), applying armor trims, and it's the fletcher villager's job site block.

How does crafting work?

Items combine on a grid following shaped recipes (position matters — a pickaxe is three blocks across the top, sticks down the middle) or shapeless ones (any arrangement — like flint and steel). Your inventory offers a 2×2 grid; a crafting table upgrades you to 3×3, which almost everything needs.

The recipe book (green icon) unlocks recipes automatically as you gather materials — collecting iron ore instantly teaches you iron tools, armor, and buckets. It’s the fastest way to learn the game: grab stuff, check the book.

The first crafting chain

Day one, in order:

  1. Logs → planks → sticks (2×2)
  2. Crafting table (4 planks, 2×2)
  3. Wooden pickaxe → mine stone → stone tools
  4. Furnace (8 cobblestone) → smelt iron, cook food — see the smelting guide
  5. Torches (stick + coal) → light your shelter before dark

Every crafting station

Station Job
Crafting table Full 3×3 recipes
Furnace / blast furnace / smoker / campfire Smelting ores and food
Smithing table Netherite upgrades + armor trims
Stonecutter Stone blocks → stairs/slabs/walls at 1:1 efficiency
Grindstone Remove enchantments, free repair-by-combining
Anvil Rename, repair with materials, combine enchantments — see best enchantments
Loom Banner patterns
Cartography table Clone, expand, and lock maps
Fletching table Fletcher job site — no player function yet
Brewing stand Potions — own system, see the brewing guide
Crafter Auto-crafts on redstone pulse — see redstone circuits

Which station saves the most resources?

The stonecutter — turning a block into stairs/slabs costs exactly one block instead of 1.5× at the crafting table. And the grindstone rescues bad enchantment rolls by stripping them (except curses) for XP back.
