Minecraft Villager Trades: Every Profession's Best Deals

FAQ

How many villager professions are there?
13 working professions — armorer, butcher, cartographer, cleric, farmer, fisherman, fletcher, leatherworker, librarian, mason, shepherd, toolsmith, weaponsmith — plus nitwits and the unemployed, who can't trade.
How do I get a Mending villager?
Place a lectern near an unemployed villager — if they offer an enchanted book, it's random; break and replace the lectern until a novice librarian offers Mending (or another book you want), then trade once to lock it permanently.
How do villager discounts work?
Two systems: curing a zombie villager (splash Weakness + golden apple) gives permanent personal discounts that stack with repeat cures on Java, and the Hero of the Village effect from beating a raid drops all prices temporarily.
Why did my villager change trades?
Villagers with no trades yet re-roll their offers periodically and whenever their job-site block is broken and replaced. Once you've traded with them even once, their profession and trades lock forever.

How does villager trading work?

An unemployed villager claims a nearby job-site block and takes its profession — a lectern makes a librarian, a blast furnace makes an armorer, and so on. Trade with them to level them through five career tiers — Novice → Apprentice → Journeyman → Expert → Master (10/70/150/250 cumulative XP) — each level unlocks up to two new trades on Java (three on Bedrock).

Trades lock permanently the moment you complete one — so keep re-rolling the job block on an untraded villager until the novice offer is the one you want.

All 13 professions and their best trades

Profession Job block Best-known trades
Librarian Lectern Enchanted books — including treasure enchants like Mending; bookshelves, name tags (BE)
Armorer Blast furnace Diamond armor pieces for emeralds at high levels
Toolsmith Smithing table Diamond tools — renewable diamond gear
Weaponsmith Grindstone Diamond swords/axes; bells
Farmer Composter Buys wheat/carrots/potatoes for emeralds — the classic emerald farm
Fletcher Fletching table Sticks → emeralds (the cheapest buy in the game); arrows, bows
Cleric Brewing stand Buys rotten flesh — a zombie farm pays in emeralds
Cartographer Cartography table Explorer maps to ocean monuments and woodland mansions; village maps
Mason Stonecutter Buys clay/stone; sells quartz and polished blocks
Shepherd Loom Buys wool; sells wool, carpets, and paintings
Butcher Smoker Buys raw meat; sells cooked food
Fisherman Barrel Buys fish and string; sells cooked fish, fishing rods
Leatherworker Cauldron Sells leather armor and saddles (master trade)

Trading is also the only way to obtain the globe banner pattern and village/monument maps, and the only renewable source of diamond gear, bells, bottles o’ enchanting, and several materials.

How do I get Mending and other treasure enchants?

The librarian trick: place a lectern, check the novice trade; if it’s not the book you want, break the lectern (the villager goes unemployed) and replace it — offers re-roll. Repeat until Mending appears, then trade once to lock it. Master librarians on Java are also the renewable source for treasure enchantments generally.

Note: Mojang’s experimental Villager Trade Rebalance toggle changes librarian books by biome — it’s still an experiment, not the default game.

How do discounts and curing work?

  • Zombie cure: splash a zombie villager with a Potion of Weakness, feed it a golden apple, wait ~3–5 minutes. The cured villager gives big permanent discounts — and on Java, repeat cures stack prices down to 1 emerald.
  • Hero of the Village: win a raid, and villagers discount everything while the effect lasts — plus free gifts.
  • Supply and demand: spamming one trade raises its price; let it restock (villagers work at their job site up to twice per day) before buying again.

What’s the fastest trading-hall setup?

Mine → farm → trade loop: a wheat or pumpkin/melon farm feeding farmers pays for your first enchanted books; a zombie spawner + cleric converts rotten flesh to emeralds; then lectern-roll librarians for your enchanting library — Mending, Unbreaking III, Protection IV — and toolsmiths for your diamond kit before you ever need to mine diamonds at Y=-59.
