FAQ

How much HP does the Warden have?
500 HP — the most of any mob in the game, beating the Ender Dragon (200) and the Wither (300). It also has 100% knockback resistance, so you can't punch it off a ledge.
How does the Warden spawn?
When a player activates naturally generated sculk shriekers in the deep dark 4 times. Darkness pulses warn you as the count climbs — each shrieker has a per-player cooldown.
Is killing the Warden worth it?
No — by design. It drops a single sculk catalyst and 5 XP, less than a zombie. Mojang built it as a stealth obstacle, not a boss fight; loot the city and leave it alone.

Warden stats at a glance

The Warden is the tankiest mob in Minecraft — a blind horror summoned by sculk shriekers in ancient cities and the deep dark:

  • 500 HP — 2.5× the Ender Dragon
  • Melee: 16 (Easy) / 30 (Normal) / 45 (Hard) — kills unarmored players in one hit on Normal
  • Sonic boom (ranged): 6 / 10 / 15 — ignores armor and Protection enchantments, pierces walls
  • 100% knockback resistance; 2.9 blocks tall
  • Drops: 1 sculk catalyst + 5 XP — deliberately worthless

How does it spawn and hunt?

A Warden emerges from the ground after a player triggers 4 shrieker activations. It’s completely blind and hunts two ways:

  • Vibrations — footsteps, block breaking, projectiles, chests opening; anything a sculk sensor detects, the Warden hears. Wool blocks and sneaking muffle you
  • Smell — it sniffs out entities within ~20 blocks even in total silence; standing still only slows it down

Thrown snowballs or arrows pull its attention to the impact point — the classic distraction.

How do you survive an encounter?

  • Don’t fight — leave. It digs back into the ground and despawns after 60 seconds of detecting nothing
  • Crouch-walk away along a wool or soft path; sprinting is the loudest thing you can do
  • Break line of scent — distance beats cover; climb or pillar up out of its ~20-block smell radius
  • Never box yourself in — the sonic boom goes through walls
  • If you must fight: enchanted netherite, stacked potions (Strength II, Regen), a shield for melee, and a pillar it can’t path up — expect a multi-minute grind for a catalyst
