Minecraft Realms vs Server: Which Should You Pick?

FAQ

What is the difference between Realms and a server?
Realms is Mojang's official subscription hosting — managed in-game, always online, no mods or plugins. A dedicated server runs the official server.jar/BDS or a modded build on your hardware or a rented host — full control, full mod/plugin support.
Is Realms or a dedicated server cheaper?
Self-hosting is free (electricity aside). Realms is $3.99–7.99/month. Paid hosts run ~$5–20/month. For a small vanilla friend group, Realms' price buys zero maintenance; for anything modded, self-hosting is both cheaper and more capable.
Can Realms run mods or plugins?
No. Java Realms is vanilla-only (plus Marketplace-free data packs you upload yourself); Bedrock Realms supports Marketplace content and add-on packs you own. Anything needing Forge/Fabric/Paper requires a dedicated server.

When Realms wins

  • Zero maintenance — no port forwarding, no updates to babysit, no host PC running
  • Always online — friends play while you’re offline
  • Bedrock crossplay built in — console, mobile, and PC Bedrock friends join the same Realm seamlessly
  • One subscription covers the group — only the owner pays; invited friends join free
  • Free Preview Realm — test Bedrock preview builds on a separate Realm at no extra cost

When a dedicated server wins

  • You want mods or plugins — modpacks, claims, economy plugins, minigames. This alone decides it for most groups; see mods vs add-ons
  • More than 10 players — Realms caps at 10
  • Custom rules — tick rates, view distance, datapack-heavy gameplay, command blocks
  • Performance headroom — a dedicated box with fast storage beats shared hosting for big farms

The middle ground

Upload a finished self-hosted world to Realms, or download your Realm to single-player anytime — Realms worlds export freely, so you’re never locked in either direction.
