How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft (Fast, 26.3)

How do you find a stronghold?

Throw an eye of ender and follow it. The eye flies up to ~12 blocks in the direction of the nearest stronghold, then drops or shatters. Here’s the reliable method:

1. Craft eyes of ender — blaze powder + ender pearls (blaze rods come from nether fortresses)
2. Throw once at spawn — note the direction and travel 200+ blocks along it
3. Throw again to confirm — keep going until an eye dives underground or reverses direction
4. Triangulate — throw from two perpendicular positions; the target is where the flight lines cross
5. Dig down carefully — stair-step or water-bucket descent; strongholds sit at any Y level, often intersecting caves

Eyes have a ~20% chance to shatter per throw — bring 15+ for the hunt plus up to 12 to fill the portal frames.

How many strongholds exist?

• Java Edition: exactly 128 strongholds, arranged in 8 rings around world origin. The first ring’s 3 strongholds sit 1,280–2,816 blocks out; the outer ring stretches to ~24,000 blocks
• Bedrock Edition: unlimited — they generate randomly at least 160 blocks from origin, plus 3 extra guaranteed under village meeting points

What to do when you find one

• Find the portal room — it holds the silverfish spawner and the 12-frame end portal; grab every lit torch path back so you don’t get lost
• Fill the frames — eyes already inside count; each empty frame takes one eye of ender
• Watch for infested blocks — cracked stone bricks that spawn silverfish when mined
• Loot the libraries — bookshelves (free books for your enchanting setup) and chest loot
• Don’t touch the portal blocks — in survival the portal activates the moment all 12 frames are filled; step in and you’re committed to the Ender Dragon fight
