FAQ

How many types of mobs are in Minecraft?
Dozens — and the count keeps growing with every drop, most recently the nautilus and copper golem lines. They group into passive, neutral, hostile, and boss mobs; each dimension has its own roster.
What is the strongest mob in Minecraft?
The Warden — 500 HP, one-shot melee on Normal, an armor-piercing sonic boom, and it isn't even classified as a boss. Among true bosses, the Wither is deadlier than the Ender Dragon for underprepared players.
What is the rarest mob in Minecraft?
Charged creepers (creeper struck by lightning), brown mooshrooms (red mooshroom struck by lightning), and any mob wearing a carved pumpkin on Halloween are the classic rare sights.

The four behavior groups

Every mob in the game fits one of four behavior classes:

  • Passive — never attacks: farm animals (cow, pig, sheep, chicken), villagers, wandering traders, utility mobs (iron golem, allay, copper golem), mounts (horses, camels, happy ghast, nautilus)
  • Neutral — peaceful until provoked: wolves, bees, llamas, polar bears, spiders (daylight), endermen, piglins, dolphins, goats
  • Hostile — attacks on sight: zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders (night), witches, slimes, drowned, husks, strays, phantoms
  • Boss-tier — the Ender Dragon, the Wither, elder guardians, raid bosses — and technically the Warden, which Mojang insists isn’t a boss

The hostile roster, by faction

Group Members
Undead zombie, husk, drowned, skeleton, stray, bogged, phantom, zombie villager, frostbite (upcoming drop)
Ocean hostiles drowned, guardians, elder guardians, zombie nautilus
Illagers pillager, vindicator, evoker, ravager, vex, witch (raids), illusioner (unused)
Classic hostiles creeper, spider, cave spider, slime, silverfish, endermite, witch
Nether ghast, blaze, magma cube, wither skeleton, hoglin, zoglin, piglin brute
Deep dark Warden — see the warden guide
Trial chambers breeze, bogged
End enderman, shulker, endermite

Utility and breedable mobs worth knowing

  • Iron golem — village defender; farmable for iron, leash-proof, attacks most hostiles
  • Copper golem — item-sorting helper added in the Copper Age drop
  • Allay — item-fetching companion from pillager cages/mansions
  • Villagers — 15 professions with distinct trades; see the villager trades guide
  • Happy ghast — rideable nether mount from the Chase the Skies drop; the nautilus is its underwater counterpart
