FAQ

How much HP does the Wither have?
The Wither has 300 HP on Java Edition. On Bedrock Edition it scales with difficulty: 300 on Easy, 450 on Normal, and 600 on Hard — plus Bedrock adds a dash attack and extra explosions Java doesn't have.
How do you summon the Wither?
Place four soul sand or soul soil blocks in a T shape, then put three Wither Skeleton skulls on the three top blocks. The skulls must be placed last. It works in any dimension and orientation — including sideways.
Is the Wither harder on Bedrock?
Yes — Bedrock's Wither has up to double the HP, a dash attack, explosions at half-health and on death, and spawns Wither Skeletons at half health. Java players should not copy Bedrock strategies expecting the same fight.
What does the Wither drop?
One Nether Star per kill, which crafts into a beacon. The star doesn't despawn and survives the Wither's own explosions — plus 50 XP.

How do you summon the Wither?

The Wither never spawns naturally — you build it: a T-shape of four soul sand or soul soil blocks (three across the top, one under the middle) with three Wither Skeleton skulls on the top row. The last skull placed triggers it. The pattern works in any dimension, and even sideways or upside down.

Wither Skeleton skulls drop from Wither Skeletons in Nether fortresses — roughly a 2.5% base drop rate, boosted by Looting. Budget for farming more than three.

How much HP does the Wither have on each edition?

This is the single biggest edition difference in Minecraft’s boss fights:

Edition Easy Normal Hard
Java 300 300 300
Bedrock 300 450 600

On spawn the Wither is invulnerable for a few seconds while it inflates — then detonates a birth explosion (up to ~69 damage at point-blank on Normal Java; Bedrock hits even harder). Stand back.

What attacks does the Wither have?

  • Wither skulls (both editions): black skulls that damage and apply Wither II — 10 seconds on Normal, 40 seconds on Hard — draining 1 HP/sec and turning your hearts black.
  • Bedrock-only extras: a dash attack (up to ~22.5 damage on Hard), a half-health explosion, a death explosion, and it summons Wither Skeleton adds at half health. On Bedrock below half HP it also drops to hover and gains a shield that blocks arrows — switch to melee.
  • On Java, below half HP it gains “Wither Armor” — immunity to arrows — and on Normal difficulty or higher it occasionally fires blue skulls, which break even obsidian.

The Wither is undead: Smite out-damages Sharpness against it, Instant Health hurts it, Instant Damage heals it — and it heals passively over time, so slow fights get ugly.

Where should you spawn it?

The smart answer is “under a ceiling.” The classic safe spot is the bedrock ceiling of the Nether roof or an End gateway frame — the trap wedges the Wither’s heads so it can’t fly or aim. Without a trap, dig a long tunnel at diamond-mining depth (Y-level guide covers the layers) and spawn it inside: the tunnel contains the explosions and you fight it head-on with a Smite V sword.

Never summon it in the open Overworld near your base — a loose Wither destroys terrain and everything in it.

What does the Wither drop?

Exactly one Nether Star — used to craft a beacon — plus 50 XP. The star is explosion-proof and takes 10 minutes to despawn on Java (versus the normal 5); on Bedrock it never despawns at all — so it always survives the death explosion.
