FAQ

How does redstone work in Minecraft?
Three parts: power sources (torches, levers, buttons, observers) emit a signal of 0–15 strength; transmission parts (dust, repeaters, comparators) carry it; mechanism blocks (pistons, doors, lamps, dispensers) act on it. Dust loses 1 strength per block.
How far does redstone power travel?
15 blocks through dust — each block subtracts 1 strength. A repeater takes any input and re-emits a full 15, and also adds a 1–4 tick adjustable delay.
What is a redstone tick?
0.1 seconds — redstone updates in 'redstone ticks' that are 2 game ticks each, and the game runs 20 game ticks per second. Repeaters delay 1–4 ticks; observers pulse for 1 tick on Java, 2 on Bedrock.

What is redstone?

Redstone is Minecraft’s electricity system — a way to move a power signal from a source to a mechanism. Every redstone contraption is three parts:

  • Power sources — levers, buttons, pressure plates, redstone torches, redstone blocks, observers, daylight detectors, tripwires, sculk sensors, target blocks, trapped chests
  • Transmission — redstone dust, repeaters, comparators, and solid blocks that carry “weak” vs “strong” power
  • Mechanisms — pistons, doors, lamps, dispensers, droppers, note blocks, hoppers, rails, TNT, the crafter, copper bulbs

How far does a signal go?

15 blocks. Redstone dust carries a signal strength of 0–15 and loses 1 point per block — a lever on dust 15 blocks away does nothing. Two fixes:

  • Repeater — re-emits a full-strength 15, adds an adjustable 1–4 tick delay, and only passes signal one direction (a diode)
  • Solid blocks — power a block strongly (lever directly attached, or repeater into it) and it powers adjacent dust

How does redstone timing work?

The game runs 20 game ticks per second. A redstone tick = 2 game ticks = 0.1 s, and it’s the unit all delays use:

Component Timing
Repeater 1–4 redstone ticks, adjustable per right-click
Observer 1-tick pulse on Java, 2 on Bedrock
Piston Extends/retracts in 2 ticks
Button (stone/wood) 10 / 15 ticks of output

What’s quasi-connectivity?

Java Edition only. Pistons, dispensers, and droppers can be powered “diagonally” — by power aimed at the airspace above them — and won’t notice until a block update arrives. It’s the bug-turned-feature behind BUD switches and compact Java builds, and Bedrock does not have it — many Java tutorials simply won’t work on Bedrock.
